This was an exciting design to approach with so many potential directions to come from. My experience with jazz has mostly been limited to the part it plays in film, from movies like La La Land and Whiplash. My inspiration for this piece, however, came from one of my earliest favorites: Fantasia 2000’s Rhapsody in Blue scene.

The fluid animation and flexible shapes that make up the characters in the scene were my main focuses when emulating the style in this illustration. Throughout the whole piece I pushed for a sense of movement being directed through the flowing background and layered pattern. The disoriented piano is exciting and fun in an otherwise dark layout.

The colors were not only inspired by the scene, but also the dark, intimate feel of a jazz club. I focused on emphasizing the soft, mellow tones underlining the rich, vibrance of the music.
